There is a moment when a headboard stops being part of a bed and becomes part of the architecture. The DaVinci is built for that moment. Its headboard stands 183 cm from the floor, among the tallest in the PSCL collection, and its face is divided into deep vertical channels that run the full height of the panel, drawing the eye upward and making a ceiling feel higher than it is. Below it the footboard is kept deliberately low, so nothing competes with the headboard for attention. The effect is calm, tailored and quietly grand, the sort of bed you expect to find in a suite rather than a showroom.

The headboard arrives in two pieces, so a panel this tall fits up ordinary stairs and around ordinary landings. Choose from 23 fabrics and five sizes, and add gas-lift ottoman storage on either a reinforced slatted base or a solid divan base. Every DaVinci is made to your order in Yorkshire.

The vertical channel headboard

Most tall headboards are a single flat cushion. The DaVinci’s is a run of upholstered vertical channels, each one individually padded and stitched into the frame so the surface has depth and rhythm from one side to the other. The channels catch light along their length rather than across it, which is why the headboard reads as tall and slender rather than wide and heavy, even in Super King. On a Plush or Crushed Velvet fabric every channel shades from highlight to shadow; on a Coniston weave the lines are softer and more architectural. In any fabric, the headboard is thickly padded from mattress height upwards, so sitting up to read or watch television is comfortable with nothing more than a pillow.

The low footboard is the other half of the design. By keeping it close to mattress height, the DaVinci leaves the view across the room open and lets the headboard stand alone as the focal point. It also means the bed works in rooms where a tall footboard would block a window, a radiator or a television.

Twenty three fabrics, four families

Vertical channels show a fabric at its best, and each of the DaVinci’s four fabric families gives the headboard a different character:

• Plush: a dense, velvet-touch pile that turns every channel into a soft column of light and shade. Cream (as pictured), Grey, Silver, Steel, Black, Beige, Green, Mustard and Pink.
• Crushed Velvet: a high-shine crushed finish with a shimmer that shifts as you move. Silver, Cream, Mink and Black.
• Coniston: a hardwearing textured weave with a matte, linen-like surface for a calmer, more understated headboard. Charcoal, Armour, Almond, Blue, Emerald and Pink.
• Naples: a smooth, low-sheen chenille-style cloth that reads as expensive without being showy. Black, Steel, Ivory and Silver.

Handmade in Yorkshire, to your order

Every DaVinci is made in Yorkshire after you order it, in the size, fabric and base you choose. The frame is built on a solid timber structure with reinforced side rails, padded generously and upholstered by hand, with each headboard channel shaped and stitched individually rather than pressed from a mould. The headboard is made in two sections that join on site, which is what makes a 183 cm panel deliverable to an upstairs bedroom without damage. A full set of sprung slats is included with the standard frame.

Delivery to UK mainland addresses is free, typically within 5 to 10 working days of ordering, and every DaVinci carries a 24-month warranty (full cover in year one, parts cover in year two). If you would rather not build the bed yourself, an assembly service can be added as an optional paid extra, and you can delay your delivery date to suit a move or a redecoration.

The DaVinci can be built as a standard frame on a 25 cm base, or with gas-lift ottoman storage on one of two bases. Both lift from the foot of the bed on gas struts that carry the weight of the mattress for you and hold the platform open while you load and unload. Nothing changes above the mattress: the headboard, the channels and the low footboard are identical. These two short films show each base opening on the real bed.

Ottoman versions are 6 cm longer than the standard frame. Both bases open from the foot of the bed, so allow clear floor space there.
