The art of the scroll

The sleigh bed takes its name from the curved runners of a horse-drawn sleigh, and the Sheffield honours that lineage with two of the fullest scrolls in the PSCL collection. The headboard rises 122 cm from the floor and rolls back at the top into a deep, padded curve you can rest against. The footboard answers it at 70 cm, rolling outward so the bed reads as a single flowing shape from either end. Between them the side rails are upholstered in the same fabric, so there is not a bare edge anywhere.

Then comes the buttoning. Rather than a few decorative tufts, the Sheffield is deep-buttoned across the whole face of the headboard and footboard in the true chesterfield manner, with every button pulled through the padding by hand so the fabric folds into crisp diamond pleats between them. Choose traditional buttons covered in the same fabric for a quieter, more classical finish, or crystal diamantes that flash from the centre of every diamond like a scatter of light. The studded border along the edge of the frame is the final flourish, a detail borrowed from Spanish and Italian upholstered furniture that gives the bed its finished, tailored outline.

Deep buttoning is where a fabric shows its character, and each of the Sheffield’s four fabric families brings something different to it:

• Plush: a dense, velvet-touch pile that shades from light to dark across every pleat, the fabric that makes a chesterfield look like a chesterfield. Cream (as pictured), Grey, Silver, Steel, Black, Beige, Green, Mustard, Pink and Turquoise.
• Crushed Velvet: a high-shine crushed finish with a shimmer that moves as you walk past. Pair it with diamantes for the most glamorous Sheffield of all. Silver, Cream, Mink and Black.
• Coniston: a hardwearing textured weave with a matte, linen-like surface that gives the scrolls a calmer, country-house feel. Charcoal, Armour, Almond, Blue, Emerald and Pink.
• Naples: a smooth, low-sheen chenille-style cloth that reads as understated and expensive. Black, Steel, Ivory, Pearl Blue and Silver.

Screens do not show velvet honestly. Request free fabric samples and hold them against your walls, curtains and bedding in daylight and again under lamplight. They are posted free of charge, and the right cream or grey is far easier to judge in the hand than on a phone.

Every Sheffield is made in Yorkshire after you order it. The frame is built on a solid timber structure, padded generously and upholstered by hand, with each scroll shaped, buttoned and stud-trimmed individually rather than pressed from a mould. Chrome legs are fitted as standard for a clean, contemporary lift beneath the scrolls; wooden legs can be chosen instead for a warmer, more traditional footing. A full set of sprung slats is included with every frame.

Delivery to UK mainland addresses is free, typically within 5 to 10 working days of ordering, and every Sheffield carries a 24-month warranty (full cover in year one, parts cover in year two).
